Enlightenment Philosophers
During the Enlightenment, great thinkers were aware that they were living in revolutionary times with radical new ideas. So, who were these rebels who started up this revolution, and why did their status matter? Most of the revolutionaries were intellectual thinkers (philosophers). These thinkers received a formal education in European universities. They came out of the new rising middle class of merchants and business people. Why does this matter? Because both groups had an agenda for their ideas.
Keep in mind that some overbearing governments considered these new thoughts dangerous. These thinkers exchanged their philosophies through written communications called the Republic of Letters. It was through these letters that great thinkers could debate one another, inform one another, and craft blueprints for the future of enlightened republics.
Letâs go through some of the key philosophies of each of these great thinkers. On the WHAP exam, you should be familiar with the three key philosophers who made important political, social, and philosophical contributions during the Enlightenment: Descartes, Locke, and Rousseau.
